MOUNTAIN AREA — The National Weather Service in Hanford has issued a Winter Storm Warning, in effect from 10 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 16) to 4 p.m. Friday for the Central and Southern Sierra.
The warning includes mountain area communities above 4,000 feet in elevation.
Heavy snow expected above 4,000 feet, according to NWS forecasters, with total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches likely from 4,000 to 5,000 feet; snowfall of 8 to 12 inches probable from 5,000 to 6,000 feet; and total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 feet, with isolated amounts up to 3 feet likely above 6,000 feet.
Winds will gust as high as 55 mph on exposed ridge tops and near mountain crests, according to the latest NWS report issued Tuesday afternoon.
The storm warning includes the Central and Southern Sierra from Yosemite National Park southward to near the Lake Isabella area.
“Travel will be extremely difficult or nearly impossible,” according to Tuesday’s NWS bulletin. “Road closures are likely due to snow cover. If you plan to travel, consider alternate strategies.”
Forecasters say the majority of snow will fall between Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening.
“If you must travel, remember to carry tire chains, plenty of food, a good deal of water, and warm clothing in your vehicle,” the NWS advises in the warning.
